Remind me why we have Easter bunnies?
Easter has always been a holiday that confuses me. As a Christian, I get the whole reason why my particular faith celebrates the resurrection of Jesus. But what about the other stuff? Why the heck do we hand out cute little chocolate bunnies and hunt colored eggs? I don't care if it's the beginning of Spring, it just seems kind of dumb to me.
And who, exactly, is Good Friday "good" for anyway?

I just had the Good Friday discussion with my husband. My understanding is that it's considered "good" because it's the day our sins were put on Jesus through his death, and the day we became reconciled to God. Although I would consider the resurrection more appropriate for all that, so I don't know why we don't call it Good Easter or something.
@snoochface - EXACTLY!! And Good Friday certainly wasn't "good" from Jesus' point of view, right?
I love that picture! HAHA
So we can eat them.
The easter bunny used to be a pagan fertility symbol or some crap like that. We can redefine him and now it is like it never even happened. Just like Christmas. WOOT!
@StewieIsMyHero - I do too! I can't help it: it just makes me laugh everytime I look at it.
@SwearNoAllegiance - I'm kind of feeling hungry for some chocolate now that you mention it!
yeah, christmas and easter have something to do with pagan, like, holidays or symbols or junk like that
As a pagan, I can tell you that Easter was originally called Ostara (and still is to us pagans) after the Goddess Ostara who is Goddess of Spring and new birth...hence bunnies, chicks, eggs and all things "easter-ish"...
When Christianity and Paganism were combined, most pagan traditions were blended with the new Christian religion Hence Jesus' birth at the Winter Solistice, and his death and re-birth at Ostara.
None of the colored eggs, bunnies or chicks have anything to do with Christianity.... niether do Christmas trees, yule logs, or the date Dec. 25th....
@flaminredhead - thanks, I appreciate the explanation. I knew that it was something along those lines, but I've never had anyone actually explain it to me.
I think it's dumb too.. whats even dumber is that my family exchanges gifts on Easter. What?!
I am with you on this one---all of it. while Good Friday may have been beneficial to us it was tough for Jesus. The only possibility as to Good Friday being good for Jesus is a line in Hebrews 12 which says in essence that He had joy in doing the cross because of all those who would believe in Him. All the other stuff, bunnies, chocolates, Easter Bunny, etc. mean nothing to the day and/or event.
You are right on with this one.

Well the fertility goddess that is the reason for the season is said to have turned a bird into a rabbit. The painting eggs and hiding them and all that are fertility rituals to honor the goddess. It's a pagan holiday really. Christ dying and resurrecting is more closely associated with the passover which can be up to about 4 weeks difference from the pagan holiday Easter. So that's some basic history for ya. You may enjoy Torahclass.com they have free lecture downloads under the studies link.
@afuncynicalbash - thanks for the info! Some of the stuff I've been reading has been incredibly enlightening. I appreciate the visit!
@key19 - I have a friend who has added "Easter monkeys" to her whole spin on things. I'm never going to figure that one out! Maybe the Easter gift thing that your family does is just a way to continue the spirit of Christmas....?
i want to eat you! i was talking about the chocolate... or was i?
@lyricsninja - YOU ARE SO CRAZY!!!
But you know how to make me smile....
Have a very nice Memorial Day weekend.
I thought of you-- My dear wife and single daughter have been in Hawaii almost a week. They don't surf, but they go out on the small catamaran in front of the Outrigger in Waikiki south of the Pink Hotel when they can. They love that. The have discovered the great eating places. They also visited some Hawaii born church friends. I have been providing the elder care for MIL and Auntie. They were OK. I will see my wife on Tuesday.
